Lighting your home can be a tricky task. Not only do you want to go for style and good looks, but you also want to be able to see properly! This is especially important when you have special tasks to do. Certain areas of your home need to be very well lit to ensure that you can do your everyday tasks with ease, and without any eye strain.
Task lighting is a particular kind of lighting, which focuses on providing the right level of light for a job. It doesn’t have a particular style, but it’s important for other reasons. It can be used in areas where you need to carry out special jobs such as reading, sewing, cooking and so on. You will usually need to use a bulb which is 60 watts or brighter in these circumstances.
So how can you add suitable task lighting to your home? Well it really all depends on the task, as well as the room. For some areas a table lamp will work wonders, while others may require a more permanent light fixture. But remember, task lighting is there to do its job. The light needs to be free of glare and shadows, and needs to be bright enough to do its job adequately.
In the kitchen, you may wish to consider lighting up your work surfaces. Undercabinet fixtures are a great idea, or also spotlights over sinks and breakfast bars. Anywhere where you regularly chop your food or eat is a good place to light especially well.
In the bathroom, task lighting can be critical. It’s a great idea to add it around the mirror, where the woman of the house may be putting on make-up and the man may be shaving. Both need a great level of light to do the job well!
In other rooms, such as an home office you just need to consider your needs. If you are an avid reader then a table lamp may be an ideal solution to an otherwise low level lighting scheme. Great for providing that all important light, but minimal and easy to switch off when you want to set a certain mood in the room.
