You’ve probably heard of the term Mission lighting. You may not know exactly what it refers to though. Well, Mission lighting is a technical term which refers to a certain style of lighting design, which led on from the Arts and Crafts movement in the 1860s. People at this time were sick of the Victorian era, and all its ornate furniture and lighting. They decided that they’d rather have something a little simpler, so this is where Mission lighting came in.
For Mission style furniture, the look is all heavy and dark wood, while for lighting it’s square brass pieces and dark colored glass. In the early 1900s, Mission style lighting was the first deliberate style to be chosen for kitchens and bathrooms. While this was the initial choice, nowadays Mission style is still perfect for kitchens and bathrooms, and is also often used in games rooms.
So what sort of styles can you choose from? Well, the fitting will usually be in a square, heavy brass style while the shade is in glass. The glass will usually be colored, but a dark color, and the shape is usually pendant. They are spindly, but also look highly modern, and so are ideal for mixing with your home décor. While the lines are often straight and square, the connections between the bulb and the stand can be curly and ornate – almost like the branches of a tree! One area that they are now especially popular is in pool table lighting, and also lighting kitchen islands.
Of course, there are a wide range of Mission style lamps to choose from. You can have a table lamp, a free standing floor lamp or perhaps a wall lamp. Of course you can also have Mission style lights on the ceiling too. So if you’re looking for a lighting scheme which is traditional but with a great modern twist, then Mission style lighting is a great way to go.
