Imagine those early days before electricity was invented. The main lighting source available was a candle. But imagine the fire risk! Just a small breeze could blow over a candle, burning down your house. So the hurricane lamp was invented which was basically a casing around your candle, to add protection. A traditional hurricane lamp will have a metal casing, as well as a glass chimney around the flame so that it is not extinguished by a breeze.
Nowadays, of course, we have electricity so we should have no need for glass hurricane lamps. But despite this, they are still a highly popular way of adding a decorative touch to a home. They might also come in very handy during a power cut, too!
So what kind of hurricane lamps can you buy nowadays? Well if you're very traditional, you may want to collect the original hurricane lamp, which was candle powered. Antique brass hurricane lamps were used for more than a century, in that time when there were no electric or gas powered lamps. Or you could go for a new and more modern alternative. You can buy hurricane lamps which are powered by lamp oil, liquid paraffin or kerosene.
Brass is still a great option for a hurricane lamp, even if you're buying new. This is because it is a hardy material, and will not rust. Hurricane lamps are an ideal exterior lighting source for outdoor locations such as the garden because of this. But they can also look very stylish inside the home, in a fireplace for example. You can buy them with all different styles of glass shade. Why not try one in cut glass or perhaps even colored glass?
You can also buy crystal hurricane lamps where the shade and bulb aren't even the most important part of the design. The table lamp can be set into a statue, which can look very charming. If you don't want a table lamp, then why not consider a wall lamp or sconce? Some manufacturers have altered the design of the hurricane lamp so that it can be fitted to a wall, for that modern touch.
