Rope lighting for the home

Rope lighting is a great option for the home if you’re looking for a type of lighting that is lightweight and unobtrusive, or if you’re looking for some interesting accent lighting.  It’s also very long life, and so is great value for money.

So what exactly is rope lighting?  It’s a generic term for accent lights which are arranged in long tubes, rather than as individual light fittings.  The rope light is composed of loads of tiny bulbs, spaced an inch or so apart, and housed in a clear or colored plastic tube.  Rope lighting isn’t designed to be maintained – you simply use it until the bulbs blow.  But with a life of 25,000 hours on average, they’re a great long life investment.  Rope lighting is also very safe as it doesn’t heat up, so you can hang it in areas where it could be touched without worrying about a fire or health risk.

One rope light is usually about 30 meters in length, but most manufacturers design their rope lighting so that the lights can be strung together in longer lengths.  This means that you can use rope lighting pretty much anywhere – apart from very small areas of course!  Inside the home, why not use the lights as great accent lights along the edge of a bookcase or around a doorframe?  Or make your staircase Hollywood style and light up each individual step.  Rope lighting is also ideal for outdoor use.  Try it along your decking or railings, or wrapped around trees for a stylish look.

Classic rope lights come in white or clear, and are the classiest option.  But rope lights can come in all different colors, so why not experiment?  A cute idea is to join different colors together, for a truly multicolored experience.  You can also buy different types of bulbs.  While most rope lamps have steady lights, you can buy ones that flash at different rates.  These are probably more suitable for the festive season, particular Christmas time.

Installing rope lights is very straightforward.  You can usually buy them in kit form, so that you have all the bits and pieces you need to get the job done.  But if you’re looking for an extra long rope light or something different, you can buy the pieces separately.  But all the rope light consists of is the actual rope itself and a power connector which attaches to the mains
