While we all need basic lighting that allows us to see at night, lighting is not just about the basic. Wonderful indoor decorative lighting can turn a house into a home, defining and illuminating the best areas of a room so that it looks cozy and stylish.
- Use uplighters, as a very quick and simple trick to add interest to your rooms. They're generally inexpensive and easy to fit, consisting of a single halogen bulb, sometimes just as a plug-in. Set them on the floor behind your furniture to throw light on a wall, or light up a plant. They can look very glamorous for very little work.
- Update your lampshades. Your lighting will look very old and tired if your lampshades are very old and tired. It can make a surprising difference to your room if you change the shades, or decorate them with braid or beads. A brightly colored shade will really brighten up a monochrome room for example.
- Add a ceiling fan. Fans can not only reduce your bills by distributing the cool or heat around the room, but they can also look very stylish. Fans now come complete with lighting, so that they are very multipurpose. You can tackle this project yourself, or else get a professional in to install the fan for you. Just think how cool you'll feel in the summer as well!
- Install dimmer switches. It's amazing what a difference a dimmer switch can make to the mood of a room. A bright light for working, a low light for a romantic evening, you can really change the light intensity to suit your mood. Dimming a light also really increases the life of a bulb, so it's good value for money too.
- Pick a chandelier for the ultimate in glamour. Chandeliers are the most luxurious light fitting that there is, and are perfect for adding a touch of indulgence to a living room or bedroom. Although they can be expensive, they are a great way to bring a real statement piece into a room.
